How to Keep Your Hot Tub Clean, Safe & Enjoyable

A large part of enjoying your hot tub to the fullest is water quality. If your water isn’t clean and clear, it’s pretty hard to take pleasure in your spa time. Dirty water doesn’t just look bad; it can be harmful to your health. That’s why we recommend following a weekly maintenance schedule.

Here’s what you’ll need to keep your spa’s water sparkling!

6 Ways to Keep Your Hot Tub Clean and Safe

1. Use a Test Kit

There are two different options when it comes to test kits. If you want to keep it quick and easy, a test strip kit is the one for you. If you want more in-depth results, a liquid test kit will allow you to individually test the different levels in your water.

If neither of these options appeals to you, you can take a water sample to your local spa dealer for testing. Your dealer will be able to tell you exactly what your water needs.

No matter which option you choose, testing your water is vital to keeping it properly balanced and safe.

2. Bromine or Chlorine Tablets

Bromine or chlorine are an essential part of your weekly maintenance. Shaped like a puck, these tablets are used to counteract bacteria and contaminants in the water.

Chlorine works more quickly than bromine, but is less stable, particularly in warm water. Chlorine also dissipates more quickly than bromine, meaning it needs to be replaced more often. The only drawback with bromine is its reaction to direct sunlight. UV rays destroy bromine more quickly than chlorine, making use of a spa cover essential.

Choose whichever one best suits your spa’s needs.

3. Alkalinity Increaser

Alkalinity is a necessary part of your weekly maintenance because it regulates your water’s pH levels. Low alkalinity will cause your water’s pH levels to drop, turning your water acidic.

Alkalinity increaser will stabilize pH levels and keep that from occurring. If alkalinity levels are high, a pH decreaser can be used to get it back into the target range.

4. pH Balancers

Low pH can cause acidic water and scaling both of which can damage your spa. High pH, however, can lead to cloudy water and foam.

Testing your water weekly will determine what it needs. Add pH up if your water tests low and pH down if it tests high.

5. Hot Tub Shock

Shock is primarily used to prevent foam and cloudy water, or to treat dirty water. It can also be used to get rid of algae.

A weekly dose of shock will keep your spa nice and clean, unless you’re a heavy user. If you’re in your hot tub more than once a day or host backyard parties, your water may require two treatments per week.

6. Stain and Scale Control

Hard water always leads to staining and scales. If you have hard water, stain and scale control will be your best friend. It will keep your hot tub free of stains and the effects of scale buildup.

As ugly as a stained hot tub is, scale build-up is even worse. It can damage both the tub itself as well as your spa’s circulation system. Using this chemical as needed will keep your spa looking good and running well.
